PRESERVING HUMANITY ONE HAND IMPRESSION AT A TIME SINCE 2009

MEET OUR LEADERS

The leadership of Impressions of Humanity reflects a rich tapestry of backgrounds, spanning the arts, education, nonprofit work, international engagement, media, and public service. Together, they share a commitment to honoring human dignity and advancing our mission to build a global portrait of connection.

Our organization is governed by a dedicated board of directors, which includes our chair and several independent members who each offer unique insight and expertise. This board provides strategic oversight, ensures mission alignment, and helps shape our long-term vision, operations, and fiscal integrity.

US FLAG_edited.jpg

This project began with a question: What would it look like to create a visual record of humanity, one person at a time?

Artist Marcos Antonio started alone, collecting hand impressions on canvas across 21 countries spanning four continents. With support from filmmaker Fernando Birri and Nobel laureate Gabriel García Márquez, the work expanded to canvas paintings and video portraits. He began with free-flowing panels, but after years of trial and error, he shifted entirely to only building each national flag from the hand impressions of local participants.

Today, Impressions of Humanity is a nonprofit organization dedicated to completing a hand impression flag for every country in the world and uniting them with a global documentary and a permanent archive into world-spanning installations.
